Sick of Biased Political News?

Getting your news from an unbiased source is more important than ever. Unfortunately, getting the facts (and nothing but the facts) is harder than it seems… Unless, of course, you’re one of the 4 million Americans who subscribe to 1440.

1440’s daily newsletter contains no biased opinions, no wild speculation, and no-nonsense – just pure, unadulterated info to help keep you up to date with everything happening in the world, from politics to business, sports, culture, and beyond.

Each email is edited to be as unbiased as humanly possible and is triple-checked (by hand!) to ensure that you’re getting the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. For those keeping score at home, that’s one big win for knowledge.

As mentioned last week, this week's issue and next week's issue will feature the top links of 2024 as determined by clicks in this newsletter over the past 12 months. This week's issue is the 'runner up' links of sorts, and next week will feature the absolute most popular links.

For those who aren't aware, I run another more popular newsletter for web developers called Web Tools Weekly, which will also be featuring a best-of list for two issues starting this week.

If you would like to support any of my newsletters, here are a few ways you can do that:

Thanks to everyone for your support throughout the year.

Now on to part one of the most popular links of the year!

Top VS Code Tools of 2024

DevDb — This was the only database-related tool that made the list, it's a zero-config VS Code extension that auto-loads your database and displays the data right inside VS Code.

Foam — This is a note-taking tool that lives within VS Code, providing a personal knowledge management and sharing system within your IDE.

Streamline Your Entire Business with a Free CRM — HubSpot provides a comprehensive customer relationship management platform to help you grow. With powerful features to manage leads and improve customer relationships, HubSpot’s CRM is completely free, with no restrictions on users or data, making it ideal for businesses at any stage.   Sponsor

CodeViz — Another popular one was this VS Code extension that builds a visual map of your codebase for faster understanding and navigation, from architecture to functions.

Bread Jam — This extension only has about 550 installs so far, but it did well when I featured it. It's a VS Code extension that makes your code variables easier to distinguish with different render patterns, to enhance readability.

VS Code Theme of the Year #2

City Lights — This was the 2nd most popular theme from 2024, according to clicks in this newsletter from all the themes I included in the "theme of the week" section. Next week's issue will include the most popular theme.

City Lights Theme for VS Code

Dark themes were definitely more popular than light themes (I only included a small number of light themes). This one is advertised as helping focus and coding efficiency.

Top VS Code Articles & Videos of 2024

My VS Code Monaspace Font Setup — This was technically published in late 2023 but I included it in an issue this past year and it seemed to resonate with those thinking of incorporating GitHub's new font family into VS Code.

Underrated VS Code feature: Native Tabs — A popular quick tip that describes how to enable and use the window.nativeTabs setting in VS Code, which is apparently currently only available on Mac.

Stay Informed for the Latest News! — World affairs, sports, business, culture, tech, and more.   Sponsor

📺 20+ Amazing VS Code Tips I Wish I Knew Earlier — Another one from late 2023, a video by James Quick covering a lot of stuff power users will likely already be familiar with, but most users should find something new here.

Best of the Rest of 2024

Classic Console Neue — Coding fonts were pretty popular in this newsletter, including this one, which is version 2 of the original Classic Console font, a monospaced font with a retro look.

Departure Mono — Another coding font that did well, this one is a monospaced pixel font with a lo-fi technical vibe that's inspired by the constraints of early command-line and graphical user interfaces.

Lysted: Your Ticket Reselling Side Hustle — Looking for a side hustle? Use Lysted to resell event tickets. List once and reach buyers across platforms like StubHub and Ticketmaster. Enjoy automated pricing and quick payouts. It’s a hassle-free way to make extra cash from unused tickets.  Sponsor

Bold — Of all the IDE or editor alternatives I included, this one was the most popular. It's a new code editor with great performance, unique debugging, low input latency, and has ability to open large files quickly.

📺 This VS Code Killer Just Went Open Source — This was a popular video by Theo Browne covering the recently open-sourced Zed editor, a viable contender to usurp VS Code's throne as top IDE.

Suggestions?

If you have any link suggestions, including a tool, article, or other resource related to VS Code or another IDE, you can hit reply, send it via DM on X, or via chat on Bluesky.

That's it for this issue.

Happy VS Coding!
