The intro tip is still on hiatus, but please enjoy this 2nd issue featuring the top links of 2024 as determined by clicks in this newsletter over the past 12 months. This week's issue features the top tools and articles of 2024. If you missed last week's runner-up links of the year, you can check the archives for that.
For those who aren't aware, I run another more popular newsletter for web developers called Web Tools Weekly, which will feature the top 30 tools of the year this week.
As always, if you would like to support any of my newsletters, here are a few ways you can do that:
Thanks to everyone for your support throughout the year.
Now on to part two of the most popular links of 2024!

Top VS Code Tools of 2024
|
Interactive Git Log — This was the #1 clicked tool over the past year. Probably not a surprise that something involving Git would be so popular. This extension allows you to visualize, navigate, and manage Git repos with a dynamic graphical interface, streamlining every step from committing to code review.
JSON Tree Visualizer — Another popular tool was this one, again featuring a fairly universal technology. This extension allows you to visualize JSON structures as an interactive tree directly in the editor, useful for working with complex JSON data.
Start the New Year Right—Stay Hydrated — Kick off your New Year’s health goals with NativePath Hydrate! This powerful electrolyte mix helps reduce dehydration, boost energy, and support muscle recovery. Packed with amino acids and electrolytes, it’s the smart way to stay hydrated in winter without excess sodium or sugars. Sponsor
OutlinePlus — The 3rd most popular extension was this one that improves on VS Code's outline feature, allowing you to search in outline view by variable and function names directly, track symbols, and improve navigation in large projects.
Project Dashboard — And rounding out the list of top VS Code tools is this extension that lets you organize your projects in a speed-dial like manner, allowing you to pin frequently visited folders, files, and SSH remotes to access them quickly.
VS Code Theme of the Year
|
Doki Theme — This was the most popular theme that I shared in 2024, and for good reason. It's not just a single theme, but a suite of 60+ themes, all based on anime characters. One of my favorites is shown below, called Nagatoro.
For the full effect of each theme, which includes the anime characters as watermarked backgrounds, the plugin docs describe how you can enable these options. You'll notice however that the themes themselves, installed in the default manner, are nice without the anime extras.

Best of the Rest of 2024
|
Miracode — This was the most popular coding font that I shared, an open source monospace font that's an improvement on a similar typeface inspired by the Minecraft typeface.
Marker — A native, secure, open source app with a user-friendly UI, for writing and editing markdown files, available for Mac, Windows, and Linux.
Creative Automation — Get the 5-minute newsletter with news, tools, and more, keeping 30K+ creatives and marketers in the loop on AI. Sponsor
MonoLisa — Continuing with fonts, this is a monospace coding font designed by professionals with the goal of improving developers’ productivity and reducing fatigue.
If you have any link suggestions, including a tool, article, or other resource related to VS Code or another IDE, you can hit reply, send it via DM on X, or via chat on Bluesky.
That's it for this issue.
