As shown in the articles section below, the VS Code team posted an update on GitHub Copilot in VS Code. As was originally announced at the beginning of December for the November 2024 VS Code update, GitHub Copilot now offers a free plan.
After you make sure you have the latest version of VS Code, you can enable access to GitHub Copilot by clicking what is evidently a GitHub icon that now appears in the title bar (it's labeled "Open Chat" when you hover over it).
Select the Use AI Features with Copilot for Free... option from the menu. You can access the same option using the keyboard shortcut CTRL+ALT+I (Win) or CTRL-CMD-I (Mac).
This opens the panel for GitHub Copilot and from there you can click the button that says "Sign in to Use Copilot for Free".
This is only requirement for using the free version of GitHub Copilot, that you have a GitHub account. When you start this process, you'll go through a few steps in your GitHub account to enable Copilot. You might be asked to enable a few settings like I was. I also had to restart VS Code for it to start working.
And that's it! No need to add any credit card info, no trial period, no pricing plans. It just works, but of course with some limitations (see article link below).
Now on to this week's hand-picked links!

VS Code Theme of the Week
|
Night Wolf — A dark VS Code theme based on the popular Night Owl theme, which I've featured in a very early issue of this newsletter.
While the Night Owl theme includes only a dark and light, with or without italics, this one has a Gray, Black, Dark Blue, and Dark Gray, along with non-italics versions of each of those. The one shown above is the Gray with italics, which I like the best.
