Issue #149  (Settings URLs in VS Code)02/26/25

Start PII Leak Detection and Data Flow Mapping Where It Matters Most: In the Code — 92% of breaches in 2023 involved Personally Identifiable Information (PII). HoundDog bridges AppSec and Data Security with a lightweight, ultra-fast static code scanner that detects and prevents PII leaks early.

It offers a critical lens into PII data handling and third-party data flows during development, minimizing costly and disruptive remediation efforts if violations are discovered in production.

The scanner helps prevent unintentional developer errors—such as oversharing or overlogging PII/PHI/CHD in logs, files, tokens, and cookies—before code is deployed.

HoundDog fully automates compliance tasks for teams managing frameworks like HIPAA, PCI, GDPR, and FedRAMP, who often struggle to keep pace with rapid development. Trusted by Fortune 500 firms, HoundDog enables shift-left PII prevention through IDE plug-ins, managed scans, and CI/CD.

If you write documentation or tutorials on VS Code, you might want to take note of the settings URL feature. This allows you to user the vscode:// protocol to directly link to a specific setting in VS Code from any document.

For example, click the following link on a device that has VS Code installed:

vscode://settings/breadcrumbs.enabled

You'll get a notification like the following (for Windows):

Opening a VS Code settings link on Windows

Or this one (for Mac):

Opening a VS Code settings link on Mac

This will open VS Code and take you directly to the specified setting in your Settings UI. You'll sometimes see this in use on the official VS Code docs. If the setting doesn't happen to exist (e.g. it's misspelled) or if you simply use the URL vscode://settings without specifying which setting, it will only open the settings without targeting anything in particular.

And if you want to get a particular settings URL to include in docs somewhere, you can do this by hovering over the setting and clicking the cog icon next to the setting.

Copy a VS Code Setting as URL

This provides various options for dealing with the chosen setting, including the ability to "Copy Setting as URL".

Now on to this week's hand-picked links!

darkvoid Theme for VS Code

As you can see, it's basically just different shades of grey, with a small splash of color for a few of the syntax tokens. The extension includes two themes, the default shown above and "darkvoid ocean" which is almost the same except the tokens are more of an aqua-blue color.
