As you're reading this issue, I'll be just returning from a short vacation. So I'll be back with a VS Code tip next week. The rest of the issue is the same as always with some hand-picked tools and articles. In the meantime, here are some ways you can support this newsletter:
- Subscribe to Web Tools Weekly (my primary newsletter)
- Subscribe to Tech Productivity, another brief newsletter I write each week that features tools and articles in the productivity space.
- Buy my JavaScript E-Books bundle, which includes 4 different e-books covering more than 250 quick tips in JavaScript and DOM manipulation, along with some longform pieces as well.
And don't forget, if you've built a tool that you think would fit one of my newsletters, feel free to hit reply and let me know! I'll be glad to consider it for inclusion.
Now on to this week's hand-picked links!

VS Code Tools
|
Hex Editor — A VS Code extension that provides a hex editor for viewing and manipulating files in their raw hexadecimal representation.
bloc — A VS Code extension that adds support for the Bloc (a state management library for Dart), providing tools for effectively creating "blocs" for both Flutter and AngularDart apps.
AI is Getting Smarter. Are You? — AI won’t take your job. Someone using AI will. Best time to level up? Yesterday. Second best? Right now. Luckily, there’s Brilliant — the interactive app that makes it easy to master concepts in math, data, and computer science in just minutes a day. Sponsor
Docker Explorer — A VS Code extension to manage Docker containers, Docker images, Docker hub, and Azure Container Registry.
VS Code Theme of the Week
|
Hop Light — I'm definitely not someone who prefers light themes for my IDEs in any context, but here's one you can consider. It's not a bad looking theme and it doesn't have any alternates, it's just a single theme in the package.
If I were to choose a light theme, I think something like this would be acceptable. The colors are clear on the white background, so it wouldn't be hard to work with when scanning code.

Best of the Rest
|
Writerside — From JetBrains, this is a new authoring environment for technical writers and developers, for producing documentation. Kind of like an IDE made for docs.
Geany — A powerful, stable, and lightweight programmer's text editor (for Win, Mac, and Linux) that provides lots of useful features without bogging down your workflow.
GitHub Copilot vs Amazon CodeWhisperer — A deep dive into two of the more popular code assistants, with a decent intro to why these tools are useful and what exactly they're for.
If you have any link suggestions, including a tool, article, or other resources related to VS Code or another IDE, send it via DM on X: @LouisLazaris or just hit reply on this email.
That's it for this issue.
Happy VS Coding!
